Thousands of people took to the main streets of Jakarta in a peaceful rally commemorating International Anti-Corruption Day, on December 9, 2009. Despite security concerns expressed by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono several days earlier, the rally went on safely. Thousands of people show spirit to fight corruption through rally speeches, posters, and theatrical acts. Students and the urban poor were among the participants of the rally, which was centered along the Bundaran Hotel Indonesia, National Monument (Monas), and The Presidential Palace. The case of questionable bail out of Bank Century by the central bank Bank Indonesia (BI) involving 6,7 trillion rupiahs (around 700 million US dollars) last year and the alleged weakening of anti-graft commission sparked people’s distrust in the government’s commitment to fight corruption, which led to this demonstration.
